In 1855 the city of Athens purchase a 30 acre tract of land along a bluff above the North oconee River with 17 acres set aside for a new cemetery. The firts plots were sold in 1856. In 1898, an additional 82 acres were purchased for the cemetery.
Oconee Hill Cemetery is considered an outstanding example of a mid 19th to mid 20th vcentury City Beautiful and/or rural cemetery. The features consist of meandering roads following natural topography, ornamental plantings and delineated family plots.Oconee Hill is also noted for its many beautifulmausoleums and monuments as well as for the intricate ironwork throughout. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 2013.
