John E. Stephenson bought 246 acres in Greene County on Beaverdam and Richland Creeks on February 13, l815, from the estate of his grandfather, William Waddell. He and Susan lived there until 1824, when they moved to De Kalb County, Georgia, taking John's widowed mother, Mary Waddell Stephenson, with them. All these are buried in the family cemetery. Their homeplace was on Evans Mill Road about five miles South of Lithonia, with the graveyard located across the road. John was a Justice of the Peace for years. He was an extensive landowner and a prominent man in the community.

Graveyard Notes: The graveyard is found from Interstate 20 by exiting on Evans Mill Road (exit 38), thence South about 3.5 miles to an intersection with Salem Road, thence continuing South on Evans Mill Road 0.5 mile to a curve in the road. Just South of the curve, the graves are found on a hill upon the West side of the road and surrounded by a chain link fence. Susannah's marker, "Sacred to the Memory of Susannah Stephenson; January 6th, 1792; August 11, 1860; Was a member of the Baptist Church 52 years", (The 1860 census showed her age as 68). John's marker - Sacred to the Memory of John Stephenson; born (rest not readable). A later marker added by family members, "The Family of John Stephenson 1786-1871; Susannah Peeler Stephenson 1792-1860; Mother, Mary Waddell Stephenson 1741-1825; others unidentified".

John served as guardian for five of Susannah's nieces and nephews. These were children of Susannah's brother, Anthony Peeler, of Jasper County, Georgia. Their names were Isaac, William D., Edna, Mary Jane and Narcissa. Records kept by guardian were in possession of Kiser A. Stephenson.
