Event-Misc:The Stevenson's were Scotch-Irish. They were living in North Carolina prior to 1768, when James was a juryman in Rowan County. Before that, James spent his early life in the English navy. He came to America and settled on the Eastern shore of Maryland. James was a Revolutionary War soldier and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain. James' brother William was the great grandfather of Adlai Stevenson, vice-president of the United States. James came to North Carolina between 1755-1760, settling 640 acres on the North Yadkin River. On 13 May 1778, James filed a land entry in North Carolina. The family was relatively wealthy. James invested most of his money in slaves. The Stevenson's were Presbyterians. Older members of the Stevenson clan claim James died at the age of 99 years and 9 months.
